What Is The VT One Theme?

The VT One theme is based off of the VT One theme used by the VT CMS. The header, the footer and different styled pages and menus are all part of the theme. Some of the special “sections” that can be used in the VT CMS are readily available via items called shortcodes. Some of the shortcodes require javascript to be written for functionality. There are a couple of shortcodes that are still a work in progress.

The VT CMS One theme was designed by the Journey Group in Charlotteville and implemented by UniRel’s design studio: Brad Soucy, Director of Design and Digital Strategy, and largely built by Jason Lockhart and Erik Miller, front end developers. The Hugo based VT One theme layout, partials and shortcodes are derived from a templates and scripts made by Scott Chandler, Marvin Addison and Erin Yanoshita.

The Hugo VT One theme is located here: https://code.vt.edu/devcom/hugo-vt-one-theme and includes a starter site in the exampleSite folder.

Note: The following areas of the template are not to be modified for any reason without prior consent from Advancement | University Relations. Modifying these areas will violate the 80/20 rule that has been established for Virginia Tech branding as well as the consistent user experience the CMS is supposed to provide all users.

The header - the black bar and main white header area
The main navigation and search drawers
The default footer

Modifying is defined as anything that changes styles, behaviors, or content within these areas beyond what the theme and CMS provide by default.

Sitemap

There is a default sitemap enabled for the VT One theme, and the definition can be viewed in the configuration file.

Google Analytics

Hugo has templates for using Google Analytics. Put your tracking id in the configuration file. There is also a template available. Google Analytics

Modifications

If you would need to make a modification of one of the layout/partial/shortcode files, do so in your corresponding main site layouts folder and not in the themes/vt-one/layouts/ folder.
